Louisville WR Smith undergoes emergency appendectomy

Louisville senior receiver Jaylen Smith is out indefinitely after undergoing an emergency appendectomy on Friday morning, the school announced.

Smith felt ill Thursday night and then awoke early Friday with severe pain. He was transported to a hospital and underwent surgery.

“We were fortunate to catch this early and anticipate a full recovery,” Louisville trainer Matt Summers said in a statement. “Jaylen is doing well and we look forward to him returning to the practice field as soon as possible.”

Smith was a preseason All-Atlantic Coast Conference selection. He caught 60 passes for 980 yards and seven touchdowns last season.

Smith has 116 receptions for 1,955 yards and 14 touchdowns in 36 career games.
